Scroby Sands Wind Farm

Scroby Sands Wind Farm is Britain's largest commercial offshore wind farm and has been supplying the National Grid with energy since 2005. It is situated 2.5 kilometres off the Great Yarmouth and Caister-on-Sea coast in Norfolk and is now a popular landmark and tourist attraction. The area was chosen to take advantage of the shallow waters and offshore sand banks around this part of Norfolk, as well as the relatively high winds and calm seas. The Scroby Sands Wind Farm has 30 huge turbines with a height of 68 metres to the hub and 108 metres to the tip, and generates enough energy to supply over 40,000 homes. Each turbine has three 40 metre blades.

The Scroby Sands Visitor Centre in Great Yarmouth attracts over 35,000 visitors each year and has several interesting interactive activities and displays, and lots of information about energy and energy efficiency. Entry to the visitor centre is free. There is also a short boat trip departing from Central Beach in Great Yarmouth that takes visitors out to see the seals on the sand banks and to admire the turbines up close at the same time.
